Term 3 is well under way and as I visit classrooms our value of Aspiration shines through, students are motivated to learn and reach for goals they have set for themselves. Our reading program continues to grow and I am always impressed by the number of certificates that come across my desk to sign, some students reaching the 175 mark in Term 3. I would continue to encourage families to support students with their reading in order to achieve milestones and benchmarks throughout the year.
Pipe Works
Over the past few weeks, you may have seen machinery on the property adjacent to our oval. Tas Water have been undertaking pipe works to improve water supply to Greater Hobart area. These works have now moved to the school side of the rivulet and are impacting on some of our school grounds. Please be aware of these works if you are accessing our school site outside of school hours. We hope the works will be completed within the next week or two.
Year 4-6 Student Survey
The wellbeing of all children and students is important to the Department of Education. An annual Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey will be undertaken in schools this August. All students in Years 4–12 will be surveyed to share views on their own wellbeing. The survey results will help our school to understand the wellbeing needs of students and for the Department of Education to support these needs. The survey will be open from 23 August to 17 September. The survey will provide valuable data on the wellbeing of students’ and identify key issues that may need addressing (eg belonging; connectedness to school).
Parent Surveys
Each year the Department of Education conducts School Satisfaction Surveys in Tasmanian Government schools, to gain feedback on what you think our schools do well and where you think we may improve. Once relevant information is sent to families, we encourage you to complete the survey which will inform our school planning and decision making in the future.
Braille Literacy Workshop
Last Friday our wonderful support team coordinated a state-wide event with Vision Australia. This event was an online workshop to connect visually impaired students with each other across the state, students engaged in a range of online events and feedback was very positive around the support our school has offered the service. Congratulations to Mrs Westerhof and her team for coordinating the event.

Last term we were lucky to be selected by Landcare Tasmania to receive these amazing wildlife monitoring cameras. Students worked with Joy from Landcare to install the cameras in our garden area so that we can spy on animals that sneak into our school at night.
Have a look at some of the photos our cameras took.
Thank you to Landcare Tasmania for the generous donation.
We are looking forward to using the camera to learn more about our local wildlife. – Mr Stewart
ya pulingina (Hello, welcome)
Over the last three weeks the kindergarten children have been exploring the natural spaces of the school through the “Bush Kinder” program offered by the Sustainability Learning Centre.
Getting outside into nature is not only good for health and overall development, but also provides children with many opportunities to develop social skills, self-regulation, persistence, language and maths skills and develop an appreciate and care of their natural surrounds.
The children have explored the creek, cooked on the fire, search for evidence of our local wildlife, shared stories, created art, and learnt about the traditions of our Nation’s first people.
wulika (goodbye)
Kinder A have really enjoyed visiting and exploring the creek and ochre painting.
The children in Kinder Duncan have thoroughly enjoyed their Bush Kinder sessions, some highlights have been cooking in the fire, creating clay animals, creating stick art and searching for scats.
We have started our journey into Asia by visiting Japan and India and are lucky to have Ms Ayako and Serah share their clothes [yukata, pavada], customs [traditional Welcome to Country with flower garlands and Namaste] and their life in those countries with us.
At Bush Kinder we have participated in various activities which uses our outdoor environment like fire-cooking, clay modelling, leaf writing and whittling. Getting into the Olympic spirit with our own Kinder Olympics, we have been learning about fair play while winning medals in different fun competitions.
Congratulations!!

Pipeline supplying water from Mt Field receives upgrade
Work to upgrade one of Hobart’s main water distribution pipelines is underway, improving reliability of supply for customers into the future.
The $3 million project is replacing a section of the Lake Fenton Pipeline that feeds water from the pristine Mt Field National Park to customers in the greater Hobart area.
Capital Delivery Office (CDO) Delivery Manager Chris Le Grange said the pipeline section being replaced is almost 85 years old and 810 metres in length.
“Renewing this pipeline will increase the reliability of the pipeline and reduce unplanned service interruptions for our customers,” Mr Le Grange said.
Constructed in 1937, the Fenton line begins at the Mt Field National Park, taking water from Lake Fenton.
“The water then travels around 120 kilometres, via various infrastructure to our customers in North, South and West Hobart, Lenah Valley, Chigwell, Glenorchy, Montrose, and Berriedale,” he said.
This pipeline has failed in the past, causing interruption of water supply to customers.
“By replacing this part of the pipeline, we are ensuring that a critical asset remains operational and can continue to supply our customers with clean and safe drinking water,” he said.
This work forms part of TasWater’s capital works program and represents a $1.8 billion dollar investment over the 10 years leading up to 2026.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of September 2021.
