Welcome to Term 3! I have had a really busy few weeks familiarising myself with our beautiful school. I feel very fortunate and excited to be leading our school, and I am looking forward to working with you as partners in your child’s education this term and into the future.

I’d love to meet and get to know as many of you as possible. Please feel free to come and chat to me and share your ideas for our school. If you would like to have a longer chat or have concerns to share, I ask that you book a meeting through the office so we can take the time to speak without being rushed.

Next week we are celebrating Book Week. We are really excited to be holding our Book Week parade and reading activities for families next Wednesday. It will be wonderful to have our families at school to be part of the parade and in classrooms. I would love to hear your ideas for how we can involve our families in school life on a regular basis.

Learn to Swim is coming up for students in Years 3-6. Information regarding the program has gone home to families, if you require another copy of the swimming letter they are available at the office. Thanks to Mr Bailey for his work in organising the program for us.

In staff meetings this term teachers are working on creating high expectations for learning and behaviour in our classrooms and developing behaviour support systems and structures to support calm and orderly learning environments. In the coming weeks we will also be getting student voice on what they believe will make our school the best place to learn and incorporating that feedback into our support documents.

Again, I welcome everyone to Term 3, and I am really looking forward to getting to know more and more of you as the year progresses.

In 1/2B we have been celebrating and learning about NAIDOC week.

Students have had the opportunity to interact with many hands-on activities around the classroom, from sand symbols, small world play scenes and decorating rainbow serpents. We looked at dreamtime stories and asked interesting questions.

This term in 6A we have been undertaking a unit on angles.

We have been learning about the different types of angles and their characteristics.

We have explored our classroom and the surrounds locating acute, obtuse, reflex, straight and right angles.

Our learning has been extended by looking at complementary and supplementary angles.

One of the activities we undertook was the marking of 30,60,90,120,150 and 180 degree angles on the basketball court.

We then took turns in shooting hoops from each of the angles to try and locate our preferred angle and range.

We will be using this data later on to graph and draw some mathematical conclusions from our data.

It has been a big start to the term in 3/4A with a new teacher and engaging in some brand-new learning!

We have begun Fluency Pairs, focusing on reading with the purpose of improving our accuracy, speed and expression. Everyone has used their growth mindset by reading with different peers and giving kind, helpful feedback.

We have also jumped into our explicit literacy program UFLI and have become experts in the schwa sound!

We are looking forward to a busy term with book week celebrations and the Swimming and Water Safety Program.

We will continue to use our Growth Mindsets with all the challenges ahead.

In 5 Kroustalis, our class has started the term off by working collaboratively to establish how we can all make the school and our classroom a safe, supportive and fun place. We have been working hard to consider how our actions impact ourselves and others. Already we have seen positive changes!

In HASS, we have started to explore the Gold Rush in Australia. This has allowed us to investigate and discuss how the Gold Rush started and consider the impact it had on Australia’s economy. We found out the amount of gold discovered would be worth over 9 billion dollars today!

Putting our research skills to good use in HASS has equipped us to plan and research information for our focus unit in English this term. We have looked at reliable vs unreliable sources to help us determine information we will use for our informative texts.

In Maths, we started off the term looking at units of measurement and fortunately for us, found that Miss Kroustalis was not the tallest in the class. We have also been focusing on long multiplication and how we can apply our knowledge of place value to help us solve these problems.

We have just started our Future Seekers program and so far, have learned about career opportunities, skills we might need in the workplace, and consider what we may want as a career when we are older. Anything is possible!

Our favourite day of the year is almost here again!!

As our Learn to Swim program falls during Book Week, we have decided to hold our Parade a bit earlier.

Our Book Week Parade will be held on Wednesday 14 August at 9:15am.

The parade will be in the courtyard and all grades will be participating at the same time.

We can't wait to see all the amazing costumes!

Families welcome to attend. There will be an opportunity to participate in a reading activity in your child's classroom after the parade.

Please return enrolment forms and required documentation to the school office as soon as possible.

The school is in need of spare clothes!

If you have any spare socks, shorts or trousers at home we would love the donations.

Please drop them into the school office.

Could families also ensure that if your child has borrowed spare clothes can they please be returned to school.

INGREDIENTS

1 Medium Zucchini (grated)

1 Carrot (grated)

1/2 Red Capsicum (finely diced)

1 cup of Corn Kernels (fresh, canned or frozen)

1 tbs Parsley (finely chopped)

1/2 cup of grated cheese

2 eggs

1/2 cup of plain flour

1/4 cup of milk

salt or onion powder to taste

METHOD

- Place zucchini and carrot in a clean cloth and squeeze out excess water

- Place gated vegetables, parsley and cheese in a bowl

- Add the eggs and mix until combined

- Add the flour and mix well

- Heat 1/2 tbs of oil in a large pan on medium heat. Scoop a big spoonful of mixture and drop into pan.

Flatten slightly and fry for 2-3 minutes on each side.

Launching into learning (LiL)

Launching into Learning is a free program where you and your child get to know your local school and other families.

LiL is for families with children from birth to 4 years of age.

Children learn a lot in the early years of life. LiL provides opportunities for you to be involved in your child’s learning in a supportive environment, helping to give your child a great start.

All sessions are held in the Grace Crichton-Gill Early Learning Centre (ELC) and are conducted by a fully qualified Teacher and Teacher Assistant.

Pre-Kinder Program

In Term 2, children who will commence Kindergarten in 2025 can attend the Pre-Kinder program. These sessions are designed for families in the Austins Ferry Primary School (AFPS) enrolment catchment and prepare children for entrance into Kindergarten in the following year.
